EMDR Intensives

Close Up on Eyes

What is EMDR?

(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an information processing therapy that helps clients cope with trauma, addictions, and phobias. During this treatment, the patient focuses on a specific thought, image, emotion, or sensation while simultaneously watching the therapist's finger or baton move in front of his or her eyes. The client is told to recognize what comes up for him/her when thinking of an image; then the client is told to let it go while doing bilateral stimulation. It's like being on a train; an emotion or a thought may come up and the client lets it pass as though they were looking out the window of the moving train.

What is an EMDR intensive?

Great question.  In my experience with EMDR I am finding that one hour is not offering the amount of time needed to address trauma.  EMDR intensive sessions allow for a deeper dive into reprocessing and allow us to work through a larger chunk of trauma at once.  These sessions are meant to be one time sessions.  So far the research has shown EMDR intensives to be as effective as weekly EMDR, the session can accomplish the same amount of work that you might do in 6 weeks of hourly therapy into one 6 hour session.  We can cover a single traumatic event or we can look at complex and ongoing trauma in which it can be more difficult to identify a main point of impact.

My approach to EMDR?

There are many reasons to choose to do an intensive session:  perhaps you are finding yourself stuck in your current therapy and would like to process some history that might be getting in your way.   If you have recently had a single incident traumatic event like a car accident or trauma at work and are finding that you are struggling to function in everyday life tasks, an intensive session could help relieve some of the adverse symptoms and suffering.  If you are interested, please reach me through my contact page so we can set up a time within the next week to connect and determine if this type of treatment is ideal for you and schedule a session.
